Today was the very first group ride I have been on. And it was a little different from what I expected.
I rode across to Barwon Heads early on, which gave me enough time to visit the toilet and get ready. I started chatting with a fellow while I was just about ready to ride off by myself, when he said he was with the riding group, so I followed him back to a group of about 20 riders.
Boy did I feel left out. Skate helmet, backpack, running shoes, and shorts over my bike shorts (the seat that came with the bike has been ripping the bike shorts). I was truly an individual, and got a few wierd looks – but mostly warm welcomes. I guess I stood out as the beginner that I truly am.
We headed out of Barwon Heads along the 13th Beach Road, and then quiet a distance out towards Torquay. I stayed up the back, not understand how to ride in groups and finally started chatting to a few riders who gave me some pointers. Very handy consideringthe fact that I have only riden solo since I started.
It was a fairly even pace all the way through, sitting in the high 20’s and around 30km/h. I was happy that I was able to keep up, and a few people did comment that I rode well, considering lack of cleats… I guess they make a lot of difference.
I did realise that a seat was of importance, so after the Mug’o’late at the cafe in Ocean Grove, I stopped by the local cycling store (Hendry Cycles) to grab a seat. Nicely priced, and maybe I won’t have to wear shorts over shorts again.
All in all a great day to ride. The wind died down, and beautiful sun. And I had a blast riding with others. I may just have to try and do it again this week…
